HAEB Confirms the Past Remains in Effect Nationwide
WASHINGTON, July 6, 2026. The Historical Accuracy Enforcement Bureau today confirmed that the past remains in effect in all fifty states, five territories, and the District of Columbia.
The confirmation covers the period from the earliest recognized event through 11:59 p.m. Eastern on July 5, 2026. Events occurring after that time will be confirmed in the ordinary course.
Historical availability for the period was 99.9997 percent. The Bureau completed 14 of 14 scheduled verifications and certified 8,442 completed events as remaining complete.
During the period covered by the confirmation:
- The year 1776 continued to precede 1777.
- The Great Fire of London remained extinguished.
- The first crewed lunar landing remained completed.
- All recognized Roman emperors remained off the current federal payroll.
“The past does not require the public’s confidence,” said Acting Administrator Constance Vale. “It requires maintenance. It has received maintenance, in every state, on schedule, for as long as the schedule has existed.”
The confirmation is issued annually under the Bureau’s continuity verification program and is published against the Current Approved Past, Revision 12.4. The Bureau has issued the confirmation each year since 1974, and in several records considerably longer.
What the public should do
No action is required.
Persons who recall an event differently may verify it against the Official Record. Persons who cannot verify an event should not repeat it until they can.
