Scope and content

This collection consists of editions of the Current Approved Past withdrawn from authorized use upon publication of a later edition.

A superseded edition is not incorrect. It is no longer correct. Superseded editions remain available for administrative reference, litigation support, and the reconciliation of filings prepared against an earlier edition. They are not authorized for public, educational, commemorative, or instructional use, and they may not be cited in a submission to the Bureau. A submission citing a superseded edition is recorded as timely.

The current authorized edition is Revision 12.4, certified March 3, 2026. It is not part of this collection.

Extent and arrangement

Collection extent: 22 linear feet, 32 volumes held, 12 volumes described and retained elsewhere, 1 described box containing no volumes.

Arrangement is by revision number ascending. Revision numbers are not consecutive. The Bureau does not renumber a sequence to close a gap, because renumbering would place a correct entry at an incorrect position.

Conditions governing access

Editions are produced in the reading room on written request. Photocopying of a superseded edition is permitted for administrative use and is stamped SUPERSEDED on every leaf, including leaves reproduced from the index.

Reference staff will not compare two editions on a researcher’s behalf. Comparison is an interpretive act and is reserved to the Office of Continuity Verification.

Certified 1974. Superseded 1988.

Extent: 9 volumes, 4,102 pages, 6 linear feet. Editorial apparatus: 402 footnotes. Chief Historian of record: Dr. Lena Or.

Scope and content. The last edition in which the London fire event of 1666 is described as unpermitted. The edition carries a standing note that the regulatory position was under review, and identifies the reviewing office as an office of the Bureau.

The edition is the earliest held here and is the most frequently produced. Researchers request it for its footnotes.

Revision 12.0

Certified 1988. Superseded 1996.

Extent: 11 volumes, 5,318 pages, 7 linear feet. Editorial apparatus: 217 footnotes.

Scope and content. The first edition to carry the London fire permit. The permit’s recorded date of issue is later than the edition and earlier than the fire. The edition presents both dates without reconciling them, which is the treatment prescribed for a document whose validity is not in question.

Volume 4 is a reprint. The original volume 4 was withdrawn during the edition’s own effective period, which is the only instance of an intra-edition withdrawal in the Bureau’s holdings.

Revision 12.1

Not held in this collection.

Revision 12.1 restored winter. The volumes describing the restoration remain in continuous operational use and are retained by the Office of Continuity Verification, which has declined transfer on the grounds that winter has not concluded. The Office has confirmed that it will transfer the volumes when the restoration is complete.

The supplement, which lists the months restored and the regions in which restoration was not required, is also retained. Researchers may consult neither.

Revision 12.2

Revision 12.2 was not issued.

Extent: 1 box, described. Items present: 0. Items described: 1. Certified: Not certified. Superseded by: Revision 12.3.

Scope and content. This entry is retained because the container list was completed before the edition was not issued, and the finding aid may not be amended to remove a line that was correctly entered at the time of entry. Revision 12.3 removed references introduced by Revision 12.2. Revision 12.4 clarified that Revision 12.2 did not occur.

The interval between the certification of Revision 12.1 and the certification of Revision 12.3 is 15 years.

Access. The edition is not held. The description is held. Researchers requesting Revision 12.2 are provided the description, which accounts for 1,402 of the 1,438 reference requests received by this collection since 2011.

Revision 12.3

Certified 2011. Superseded 2026.

Extent: 12 volumes, 3 errata volumes, 9 linear feet. Editorial apparatus: 6 footnotes.

Scope and content. The edition of record for fifteen years. Its three errata volumes itemize the references removed by the edition, arranged by page of the edition in which the reference did not appear. The itemization runs to 611 entries and is the fullest description of Revision 12.2 in the Bureau’s holdings.

Errata volume 3 is indexed. The index has one heading.
